Default Is it a Cadet Force?
This man was commissioned into the 1st East Lancs Coy, Royal Engineers in September 1914 The badge here does not appear to be either Engineers or East Lancs. He had however been in a school cadet force and probably also while at University.

Looks like a police cap badge or special constabulary lapel badge. Regard

I am sure he was none of them. The full photo does show a very young man who apparently went straight from University into Army

Agree with Simon in that a full photograph would help, the cap badge does not appear to be very well centered if that is the cap seam behind it.

The Coat of Arms in the centre of the badge resembles that of Bolton or Barrow-In- Furness.

As I said,looks very young. I can see no clues in his uniform. but that is not my field

Thanks for that.

Puzzling uniform with different colour collar and shoulder straps.

Volunteer Training Corps is my first thought but the collar and straps confuses me.

I am confused at the moment.

Possibly a WW1 Volunteer Training Corps. Some did have cadet branches. The non-issue uniform suggests that he is not regular army, territorials or an OTC.

Any Photographers Studio mark anywhere on the image? May tie down a location for VTC Unit or School etc.
