The average house price in 1942 was £500.

that's inflation for you.

What amuses is me is that I work with a lady whose uncle was in the LRDG. I must ask her if she has any of his badges etc. Apparently he was rather wild, unlike her father who was a Sergeant RA, and rather enjoyed his life in the North African desert.

You might get "na, gave all that stuff to the charity shop," or "no it all went in the bin."

Surprised prices have held up so well in the recession, guess still too many collectors chasing limited supply.
Must admit £300 or under is my comfort zone, I would gag on the idea of paying a grand for a single badge.

BBC: Art and Antiques holding up.

Especially if it were to turn out a wrong'un. For that price I'd want to see papers etc.
As I am creeping into the more expensive zone with my East Surrey collection I have to admit that I become more cautious, a dodgy KC 1902-1959 pattern for a tenner max is not a big hit but £70+ for a VB is if it is not 'good'. I like to get around the fairs occasionally to handle the upper end stuff to 'get the feel'.

Cool high prices

No matter how bad we are told things are, there are always exceptions, about ten years ago an old militaria dealer who I had dealt with for some years told me that badge collecting was finished. Mind you he had a lot of my good spares, so I took what he said with the usual pinch of salt!

Another dealer friend said that there were no youngsters coming along, as dealers or collectors and that the interest had gone out of the hobby. With this information and a recession, I am amazed when I go to an auction that anyone bids against me, but they do . . !

I realise the SF collectors are rather limited to the variety of badges to collect and with the ever present fakes on the market, when they see a badge being offered with a money back guarantee they go for it big time, as to whether this is 100% genuine, I would not know, certainly I would like some provenance for £820.

Default high price

hi mike,

seen this yesterday and thought it was a high starting price but was unsure if it was a member and as a newbie decided to keep quiet .
the provedence would need to be very good but would be helpful if the provedence was listed as well, even in a small way.

There s no provenence worth that. You have got to be able to say no. This should be a hobby & not a disease.

I used to have a massive RSR collection, and this badge is genuine. It's also being sold by a very knowledgable and decent SF dealer, so he's trustworthy. However I sold my complete badged beret's with provenance for £800 only a few years ago. So prices are now through the roof.

If you've always wanted one, I'd recommend this one.

Talking about high prices there was a LRDG red white slip on auction by Bosleys last year that went for GBP 1,100-1,200 excl 15% premium.

Tony Marsh, a 1st SAS officer, medals, badges plus 200 photos went for GBP 33,300 excl premium at Warwick Warwick

Nice pics..

although some of my best ever bits have been gifts, sometimes you have to pay for some bits.

Its worth whatever someone will pay.

HI the badge is fine no question and to be fair the thick end of a £1000 is about what i would expect to pay for one in todays market and if you wanted copy of the units war time history ` in side Noahs ark ` you will have to pay £150. 200 quid ,yes just for a book , regards ,Nemo
