Hello Colin, Congrats on a nice hat badge, ironically I just picked up a pair of collars this past weekend. The badges are heavy for their size, and very well made.
Do not know much about this Regiment. Any history to be told. Best Jack Last edited by irish; 11-09-13 at 09:57 PM. |

Hello Jack,
Very nice! Those are officer issue white metal & gilt collars c.1958-62. Nice find! (edited: should have read private purchase as opposed to issued) Garry Last edited by Rockape; 12-09-13 at 08:10 AM. Reason: see in text |

I only have these notated as post 1881-1915 for the O/R's one - when the name changed (of course they may have been worn after that date). You might find it worthwhile getting a copy of "British Colonial Badges" by Barr Renfrew/Margaret Renfrew and Bill Cranston - that is, if you are interested in BCB. |

I spoke to Barry Renfrew a few weeks ago and he mentioned he has another book published around Xmas time. I'm looking forward to that! |

Simon, Jack and Colin,
May I ask where you bought these badges? |

My pair came from a dealer here in the U.S. at a miltaria show in Kansas City

Hi
I got mine from Clanfield Militaria. It's pre 1927 (1906-27?). Colin

I have the following on the "lineage" of the WIR (which was by the way not a "local" unit, but they were part of the Brittish Army):
1795: 1st - 8th West India Regiment raised. Until 1798 they were not know by these numbers, but by the names of their commanders, e.g. John Whyte's Regiment of Foot in the West Indies. 1798: 9th - 12th West India Regiment raised. 1802: 7th, 8th and 10th WIR disbanded. The 9th renumbered 7th and the 11th renumbered 8th. 1803: 12th and 8th WIR disbanded. 1816: 7th WIR disbanded. 1817: 6th and 5th WIR disbanded. 1819: 4th and 3rd WIR disbanded. 1888: the 1st and 2nd WIR become 1st and 2nd Battalion, The West India Regiment. 1897: 3rd Battalion raised. 1904: 3rd Battalion disbanded. 1920: 2nd battalion disbanded. 1927: last Battalion and thus the Regiment disbanded. 1958/9: The West India Regiment reraised. 1960: merged with the Barbados Regiment and now 3 battalions strong. 1962: split between The Jamaica Regiment, The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment and the Barbados Regiment. Please, any corrections are welcome.
