If the cap is not genuine, on what order of dress would those chinstrap size SAS anodised buttons have been worn? They can't be the easiest thing to fake.

Default total joke

no way is this genuine
more than lkely the northumberland yeomanry listed item with a sas badge and buttons sewn on
as the real item was issued for the queens coronation for21sas and then used by 22 sas but not for long
if as the guy says 70s issue they would still be wearing them
have seen so called sas officers stable belts for sale on flea bay
turn out to be qdg belts

"SORRY NO NAME OR HISTORY AND I WILL NOT MAKE ONE UP LIKE SOME DEALERS"

LOL must surely be one of Andrew's more amusing statements.

Would anyone care to explain why this is a saga, joke and not genuine?

I'm commenting on the seller's statement suggesting that he wouldn't be unscrupulous, not on the cap.

Halfway down the page and you'll see why I find his comment amusing.

Gents, for the non SF collecting members of the forum you need to be clear about what you are saying. Things that are obvious to you may not be so to the rest of us- and we may not know anything about the dealers selling SF items. Happy to get PM's if there is any info best kept off forum. Cheers, Paul.

Certainly in my military yoof - c 1966-68 - SAS officers wore this cap in Blues/No 1 dress. As I have said before the semi-mystical status of the Regiment is a relatively new thing. In 1966 most people regarded them as nothing more than an interesting side-line. And Yes they did appear in Blues with stripy trousers and peaked caps.

Also, there is a difference between a dealer selling an item as genuine, believing it to be so, and being mistaken, and a dealer knowingly selling something that is a fake or having faked it. It is dangerous to lable someone wrongly when you have no proof that it is anything other than a genuine mistake.

Default Peaked cap on Ebay

Friends,

The Peaked Cap offered on Ebay is not the peaked cap as worn with No. 1 dress by 21 SAS officers during the Coronation and later.

That badge should be silver and gilt, the buttons silver and all peaked caps worn by the SAS were made by Herbert Johnson, not Gieves.

My bet: a Royal Army Educational Corps cap, with SAS badges and buttons.

Cheers,

Johan

I am sorry Johan but to say all SAS officers' cap were made by one hatter is a fundamental misunderstanding of the British System. An officer is/was free to buy his cap from any one of a number of hatters/tailors. Sure there is an official "Regimental hatter" but beyond that it's a matter of choice. As someone has said the only differences between these caps are the buttons and badge. Hatter sews on buttons, adds badge and lo and behold an RAEC or SAS cap.

On the other hand I am not sure when Hawkes - an army tailor - was taken over by Gieves - an RN tailor - but that would indicate a date.
