Hi folks

Any ideas on this badge, I have seen them listed as Search Light Operators but this clearly appears to be a 'T' as opposed to an 'L'

I have seen them too. I have always thought that if you turn the middle letter around 180 degrees, it makes an "L" for Search Light Operator. Beyond that, have no idea.

As far as I know this has never been satisfactorily identified.

To be honest I think this is "SJO" in a wreath, as to whether this pertains to "Senior Jxxx Operator" it's anyone's guess.

Of course there have been many spelling mistakes with insignia, so this could be a mistake.

Only an idea . . !

The typeface which has been used for this badge is a script IMO, not Old English or Saxon Black.

I can see where you are coming from, but I think it is a "J", however, having spent a few years in the printing trade I know some designers use a lot of license in their designs.

Having looked in my Edwards and Langley, British Army Proficiency badges I must say that you are correct in saying that you think it is a "T".

There is an illustration of a Roman "T" in a wreath which was not identified at the time of publication, that was nearly forty years ago and more information may have come to light since.

Most of the typefaces used seem to be either a script or a Roman face with some sans serif as well, much of the lettering seems stylized probably the makers variation of a letter and as many of these proficiency badges were unofficial, they may have been made locally with no official guidance.
