The collecting scene has largely moved away from outdated forums onto Facebook platforms

Yes that's right.

True to a certain extent and also Instagram. Do you also think there's less research done today by collectors? Not by the ones at the top end but by the majority?

I know of five people who are considered world authorities on their subjects and all of them covered SF's and all had collections that were world class. Three have left the forum, one hardly comes here anymore and one was banned.

Great thread and interesting post about the forum having little new content. I check in every day and there's always two pages, roughly 40 new threads, so I don't believe the forum is on it's last legs.

In my opinion the interest in military insignia is still strong and the need for good reference material is essential given the amount of fakes for sale. The beauty of this forum is there are many experienced collectors who willingly provide their opinions in a timely manner. The interest obviously increases when a piece, such as the one that started this thread, has been in previous collections.

Good collecting.

Paul

That's true except four of the five collectors that I mentioned are not replaceable because there is no-one or a group of people on this forum that knows what they know. In their fields of collecting their knowledge is unsurpassed from what I know of them and they haven't gone to Facebook or Instagram but have basically gone dark.
That is all I have to say on the matter.

I think you'll find the former members you mentioned communicated extensively and in a few cases are still able to be contacted. Also, a few members have obtained their collecting notes so I'd feel comfortable that 99% of rare insignia that may require authentication could be confirmed. I'm a fortunate receipient of this advice.

Enjoy the hobby.

Paul I didn't mention any names. I won't make this a circular debate except to say that two of the former members I'm thinking of never gave their notes to anyone. Another one is on record saying he never had notes but I think he said he had about 95 percent of the info in his head. You most certainly have not got the info from two of those and neither has anyone else on this forum.
It depends on what you call rare insignia but I seriously doubt that 99 percent can be confirmed by you or this forum but I guess whatever makes someone happy makes them happy.

Agreed. Badge collecting doesn't revolve around SF in any case, there's a lot of specialists in other areas, no doubt also with world class collections, who make considerable effort to contribute to this forum. Several have produced books to pass on their knowledge.

99% of the posts don't relate to anything I collect but I still enjoy reading them for the knowledge, not to mention the opportunity to see some amazing examples of the badge-making craft.

Left facebook a couple of years ago, I don't need the Mark Zuckerberg brand of surveillance and data gathering/on selling in my personal life. Many of the facebook groups have the same sort of people problems that crop up from time to time on this forum, doesn't matter what sort of platform, some people are just intolerant of others' opinions.

The forum will always be what people put into it. When I last looked, membership of this forum was voluntary. If the content doesn't float your boat, or you feel unable to make effective contributions to discussion it doesn't force people to remain members.

Regards, Keith

There is still great value in being a member here as there are a lot of knowledgeable collectors on this forum who may not be regarded as world authorities but they still have a lot to contribute.

Even world authorities don't know everything.

Jack.

Several years ago I asked one of the so-called SF "world authorities" about fake a/a badges. He quite cataqorically stated that all of the a/a badges he was selling were original as a/a badges have not been faked. I think that I can say with out fear of contradiction that he was very wrong as Chris Marsh's book has shown. I would regard Chris an a world authority on a/a cap badges but I think that even he would say that he is still learning new facts. Everyone has something to contribute.

This Forum, is i suppose what you make of it. I personally believe you won't beat this place for knowledge, due to the members willingly sharing it. It's not worth knowing, if you're not willing to share what you know. If you're not happy with the Forum, leave.

She was given away by the 5 o'clock shadow and the brightly bulled ammo boots though.
