Hello Iain,
It's just an ash tray, it's been around for as long as I can remember too, certainly not unique, they made a die, so would have turned out quite a number, I've seen another one a few years ago, not really relevant to this thread, although, she was brought to Great Britain, she had sailed home and was surrendered there on the 24th of November 1918 after a successful career as a U Boat rather than a merchantman. Kind regards Frank |

This is how she was sold to the public, before being very actually sold off, she is described as the "Deutschland" rather than her true identity!

Hi Frank,
I realise it's just an ashtray but I'm sure not that many are still around. Do you happen to know the UB number for the "Deutschland?" regards, Iain

Thanks Hussar,
my interest was that the ship my G Grandfather Captained, SS Kendal Castle, an armed merchantman, was torpedoed on the 15th Sept 1918 by UB 104. I just wondered if there may have been a coincidence. Iain

U104 was a different kind of boat mate.

I know nothing about the U boats at the time.
I thought a U Boat was a U Boat; obviously you would get different flavours but I dont know what the U 104 looked like.

Different construction techniques lead to slightly different shapes which are easily recognisable as a different type. U104 is very different in looks to U155.

Thanks Magpie,
really quite different subs, U 155 being a Cruiser, Merchant U boat and U 104 an Ocean-going diesel-powered torpedo attack vessel.

Hello Iain,
I think you will find that the real difference was simply that Deutschland was actually built as a merchantman and originally crewed by the North German Lloyd Line, before being crewed by Willies wretched pirates and baby killers! Regards Frank |

Very true. Germany went into the war believing that the only use for submarines was as blockade runners. Nobody in the Kriegsmarine had yet envisaged them as attack vessels.
