Another nice little lot from a house clearance, obviously removed from a uniform. Not a rare set but it is good that they have been kept together. I particularly like the Overseas Chevrons.

Have a look at where the slider attaches. It it per chance attached to a (now concealed) Gaunt plaque hiding under the muck?

The scars of the originally fitted E-W loops are also just visible.

I am sure that you are right, but the presence of the crown and the quality of the buttons made me think that it was an Officer's set. The chevrons suggest Great War and I am not sure if R.E. O.R.s wore regimental buttons during the war. I am sure that someone will know.

Sadly, no concealed plaque, but I definitely can see where the lugs have been removed. It is clearly not an O.S.D. cap badge and the J.R. Gaunt London maker's mark appears to be the correct one. Which brings us back to O.R.s wearing maker's marked cap badges during the Great War. There is, of course, no way of telling when the loops were removed and the slider attached.

These GM examples by Gaunt are a little bit of a mystery to me.

Most regularly encountered with loops and a Gaunt plaque behind the crown. The GM often has a high quality factory finish appearance.

Most recently I acquired the below which had the extra steps taken of conversion to a slider like yours but also voiding.

My thoughts so far are possibly a privately bought NCO item? But this may well be very wide of the mark.
