Thank you all gentlemen, for clarifying those abbreviations etc.
Also for the further insight regarding dating of uniform features.
Re further research, I dont, as yet, know the soldiers name but am working on what is a fairly messy family tree that is complicated by intermarriage, a sniff of bigamy and a child or two who doesnt appear to have been registered at birth!
All good fun.
Once I have a name, I'm pretty certain some military records evidence will appear but if I do need more help, I'll come back and ask.

Staying with matters military, can anyone recommend a good WW1 battlefield guide?
I am keen to re-trace the war diary steps of my Great Uncle who fell at Bullecourt during the battle of Arras in May 1917.
I have seen all the advertised guides on the AGRA site but many have either packed up or have somewhat restrictive terms ......

Thanks all .......

Hah, yes, but its when you get into Norfolk that the eyebrows start meeting in the middle !
(Apols to Norfolk folks of course!!)

Thanks for link but have that one already plus most of what else has been written. The main focus is on the Australians and little covering the British forces involved. I still get highly confused about the structure of what is called the 7th, 58th and 62nd British Divisions. Suddenly, the guys dont get attibuted to their actual regiments.
The war diary for the day is pretty brief really and of course, only officers casualties get recorded. I am thinking of getting a copy of the battlefront map with a view to trying to plot where they were on the ground.

Thanks again for your input.
