1/1 Herefordshire Reg
Hi,
Seeking help with identifying the uniform, badges and flashes of my Grand Father ( the one in the centre ) what are the chevrons on the lower left and right arm, also the chequered badge top of the arm. He was in the 1/1 Herefordshire Regiment 1914 -1919 |

My Grandfather 237620 Pte. Richard Hodson Carter originally enlisted into the 2/5 th Bn Kings Liverpool and was transfered to the Herefords .
This book pictured is well worth getting for information on what the battalion did. There is a picture in the book entitled "1st Bn Herefordshire Regiment: NCO survivors of WW1 in Bonn early 1919" presumably Wychwoods grandfather is in that picture P.B.

I believe that the formation sign is the black and white chequers of 34th Division.

Looks like overseas service chevrons and wound stripes on the forearms.

The photograph is post 1918 by a year or two.
Badges for the wounded were authorised July 1916, and overseas chevrons early 1918. Whereas the 1914 ribbon was issued early enough to be worn towards the end of the war, the BWM and Victory were not promulgated until well into 1919, the issue following soon after. The man in centre has at least 5 overseas chevrons ........ difficult to be sure, perhaps even 6. That is a lot of war service. |

The 1/1st Hereford's didn't join 34th Division until June 1918 having previously served at Gallipoli and then Egypt, where they had served with 53rd Division. Suspect an incorrect entry somewhere. As suspected the MIC is in error he was serving with the Hereford's in 1919. Last edited by Graham Stewart; 17-08-12 at 10:56 PM. |

This may help.
Incorrect entry London Gazette: 24 Jan 1919 -1235 / 235078 Sjt. Watkins R.C. 1/1 Bn. (TF) (Ross) listed under Hertfordshire Regt. Amendment London Gazette: 17 June 1919 / 235078 Sjt. R.C. Watkins 1/1st Hereford R MIC list: I see two listings for R.C. Watkins - 235078 Hertfordshire Regt. & 938 Herefordshire Regt. Why 2 cards with different service numbers? Why 2 service numbers? Inscription on his medals are MM : 235078 Sgt. R. C. WATKINS 1/1 HEREFORD R 1914-15 Star : 938 CPL. R. C. WATKINS HEREFORD R 1914-18 War Medal : 938 Sgt. R.C. WATKINS HEREFORD R |

Why two cards & two numbers? Basically the first number '938' is his actual Hereford number, which was changed in 1917 to the new six figure Territorial numbering system and so he became - '235078'. Up until then every unit within the T.F. had it's own numbering series which from 1908 began at '1' and finished at '9999', from where they were to start again. The second of the two cards could be his winning the M.M. Looking at both of their numbers(Reginald & Ernest) you're looking at two Territorial's who were possibly serving from the formation of the T.F. or slightly later i.e. 1908/09 or 1909/10. However that is a guesstamate and a Hereford researcher may know exactly when they enlisted. |
