Here is a pair of "W" for you to compare Iain... a little over 12mm high and 11mm wide so maybe not regulation size.

David Alexander Kenny , 1/87 and 11/2277. Died of illness 6/4/1918 , so the photo he is in is taken pre war .

A very interesting person, he was promoted 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Wellington in January 1912. He also started the Kiwi concert party.
