Another new member, joined this morning, retired soldier and interested in anything military are more than half my life in the Australian army. I live in SE Queensland, and have some badges I am willing to get rid of to collectors, during my service I collected lots of badges, had them in a trunk, and gave them to a real collector some years ago, then found some others recently, but most of what I have are formation signs we used to wear in the 50s and 60s on both our summer dress (KDs or Khaki Drill) uniforms and battle dress uniforms, then they went the way of many other badges that are no longer seen, or at least, not by me when I go to the odd military parade.

Anyway, enough waffle, glad I found the site, and glad to be a member of, from what I have read so far, is great, and will be the means for me to spend many hours of browsing the various threads.

I do have some badges etc, the remainder that I found in my old army trunk not long ago, but not sure if they are worth anything, and I dont collect badges any more, used to many years ago and gave my collecton, mostly South African and Canadian badges that my Dad collected for me during WW2. The stuff I have now, and not sure if worth anything, are as follows
1. a copy of the book Gallant and Distinguished Service Vietnam 1962-1973, it is the soft cover copy.
2. A round badge with a St Andrews Cross in the centre on which is an animal of some sort like a deet, and the words Strike Sure, then on the top the word London and below the circle Scottish, and all surrounded by a wreath. Has what remains of a pin fitting lug on the back, and appears to be silver embossed onto bone all contained in a silver surround.
3. an Artillery badge that is fixed to what appears to be a .303 rifle with bayonet attached, not sure if was intended perhaps for the girlfriend of a gunner to wear, or something else It is small, the rifle is 5cm long, gunner badge centred and is 2.5 cm.
4.Australian Cloth formation signs for Norther, Eastern and Southern Command plus Army Headquarters, 1st Indep Inf Bde, 28 C'wealth Bde, United Nations (the round patch) and another that is gold bullion on a red background a mailed fist holding a Kris, a gold coloured WO1 badge and a bullion WO1 badge on blue cloth, both Lion and Unicorn Imperial style pre Aust having their own Aust coat of arms WO1 badge, an RAASC Other rank hat badge, some odd current badges like RACT, RAAOC, RMC, black rising sun collar badge with Kings crown, volour patch for 3rd Aust Inf Bn (green and brown horizontal halves) Interservice sport badges for Army, Navy and RAAF, Sports Badge SQ Area Sport.
could be other stuff somewhere, but would have to go through more boxes of stuff I have never seemed to throw away, but must do one day

identifying the cap badge on the soldier in the photo is not possible as enlarging makes it grainy, so we need a higher resolution scan to be in with a chance.

Mike and Tinto - thank you so much for your assistance, I am hoping that others on this site will perhaps either confirm your advice, and make posts that will also come up with the same Regiment, or offer others that may also be correct, then I can perhaps contact the Regimental museum or other authority to find out if my Dad served with them.

Maybe somebody can also identify the formation sign of the mailed fist holding the dagger, I got it in Malaysia in the mid 60s, so must have come from somebody I met there I think, but cannot remember who it was or even how I came to have it.

what a great site, wish I had found it years ago, have had a computer for more than 10 years, only found this site 3 weeks ago, via the ARRSE site.

North Devon Yeomanry?

Hi,
The formation sign of a raised dagger and forearm looks like that of the 19th Indian Division. According to Howard Cole's book it should be a yellow dagger on a red background.

i am thinking that this maybe for someone attached to a higher unit like the 14th army

thanks for the suggestion re the Royal North Devon Yeomanry. I googled them and found that in 1920 they were amalgamated with another Devon Yeomanry Regiment and became an artillery unit, with 18pounder guns. As my Dad did not join till the mid to late 1920s and I do know it was a mounted unit then I think perhaps that is not the correct unit for him. I would welcome any other suggestions though, I have been trying to get some information from the Household Cavalry archives people, still waiting for them to reply, and hoping they will confirm the suggestion that the badge is 1st (Royal) Dragoons, then I can seek somewhere or some body who may have nominal rolls of the Regiment from the period my Dad served, because without obtaining an Army number I can take my search no further, as British Archives advise they cannot even commence a search for his military record without an army number - so I am at a dead end at present, waiting, waiting, but as I have been trying to track this for some years before I found the Badge forum, I have the patience, but the members of the forum have been the most helpful to date, the other suggestions I have been given from many other places were about as useful as a hip pocket on a pair of underpants.

I forgot to ask if there are any collectors out there who look for sweetheart badges, as it seems the London Scottish badge posted on this site for me, and the small artillery badge mounted on a rifle are "sweetheart badges" - does anybody collect them. I did find some sweetheart badges on the album thread, and thought perhaps they might interest a collector.
