Default Luftwaffe Plate - well bit off!

Hi this piece of plate was dug up at RAF Gatow - Berlin by a friend while a youngster while his dad was stationed there, his question is , is this actually worth anything?
Its interesting not my area and no idea? What do you think? Cheers billy

If it had been part of a plate, an unusually long tongue would certainly have been required to lick it clean!

It appears to be a standard Luftwaffe Bowl, unbroken they sell for £20-30.

For one of these, a date of 41 is probably not early, early examples are undated and have the drooptail eagle, then many are dated 37-38 and post 41/2 is uncommon, if I remember correctly from when such things interested me.

If only they had stuck to making their pots and not attempted to take the civilised world into the abyss!

Hello Jerry,
I never thought of you as a collector in this area, I dare say, doubtless Lord Kitchener himself, had a few of their fine pieces in his equally fine collection, although, they would have been somewhat earlier in manufacture and I should imagine very decorative and less utilitarian.
Kind regards Frank

Thanks for your help will let him know it is a bowl and just what it may have been if complete! I like the fact he dug it up in Berlin and long before the wall came down! Cheers billy

Frank,

I visited the Kitchener memorial and the new HMS Hampshire memorial Wall on Orkney last week. Also the Tower of London poppy display at St Magnus's cathedral.

My Dad fought the Germans and as such it seemed acceptable to collect such items and also I like ceramics. I still have the bowl though 99% of any German items from the nazi period I once had are long gone.

I have ceramic pieces from the Crimean war, Boer war and great war periods and also Napoleon commemoratives.

Morning Jerry,
No issues here, people collect whatsoever they like, there is no doubt that Germany made some super pots, I just wish that was all they had done.

It's not fair, I seldom get to go anywhere, what with Allison at Horse Guards and you in the Orkney's both at key moments in time, I feel left out!
Kind regards Frank
