Bumping this one up for consideration please:

All HC NCOs included the crown with their ranking. I would have expected a 2LG corporal of horse to retain correct rank badge on transfer to the Guards MG. My understanding is that the HC retained their STs, for example.

I can see the logic of being forced to remove the crown to avoid confusion in a unit which also had colour sergeants of Foot Guards [other than GG of course]. I can also see stern resistance.

A bit of a puzzle?

Thanks for this, I have got the form to complete and request a search of the archives for more information.

Thank you, I have his medal card (attached) all though I confess I am not sure how to decipher some of the card, the reference to Roses for example, but no clasp ?

I know William was a career military man, the 1901 census finds him at Regents Park Barracks, a Trooper, so if i am correct in identifying him as being the ancestor in the photo, then after some years at that rank he managed to gain the rank of Sergeant (?) during the war - no wonder he looks so proud.

He would have been 3rd Cav Div, 7th Cav Bde:-

1st Life Guards
2nd Life Guards
Leicestershire PAO Yeomanry

I note that he has the rose on his 14-15 medal. The C/A date is significant (or coincidence) "13/5/20"..... exactly 5 years before they were all in the line at Frezenberg in front of Ypres.

Typo - clasp & roses to the 1914 Star, not 1914-15 medal.

It's hard to spot, but the reference to clasp is there - "1914 cl & roses......."

Should there not be mention on the card of the GMGB? I know little of these cards but thought they showed regiments served with? I also thought the GMGB consisted of men from the Foot Guards? Regards, Paul.

The rose on the medal ribbon indicates being under enemy fire. Seen here with the clasp.

Basically being within range of enemy light artillery I think it was, between the dates shown.
Clasp worn on the ribbon that the star was suspended by, rose worn on the ribbon "bar" but the rose is sometimes found mistakenly worn on the ribbon of the star in conjunction with or without the clasp, as shown here.

As Paul has pointed out in post 23, the Guards Machine Gun Battalion was only made up of members of the Brigade of Guards. The soldier in the opening post is not from the Household Cavalry. Unless he transferred from the 2nd Life Guards he is someone else altogether.
