Oman Parachute Squadron
What shoulder title did the Oman Parachute Squadron wear?
In 1985 the Oman Gendarmerie had their D Squadron convert to a parachutist unit, in 1980 the unit was formalised as the independent Oman Parachute Squadron. During 1985 the squadron grew in size to become the Oman Parachute Regiment. Both the squadron and the regiment have similar headdress badges but with the scroll changed to reflect regiment from squadron. The title worn by the Parachute Regiment is attached to this email. I am advised that the initials on this title state "Sin" followed by "Meem" and then "9ayn" which would stand for Sariyya Midhallat Omaniya or Oman Parachute Company. However the Regiment was not a company sized unit and I would have expected the title to be the equivalent of Oman Parachute Regiment. The modern standard Arabic word for Regiment is Fawj or Firqat thus I would have thought the initial would have been "Fa". I would be obliged if some one can clear this matter up. I guess it is possible that the squadron title was not replaced in time before the unit titles were replaced by a universal Army title. Quicksilver |
