Default KOSB Minden day parade in Berwick today 27th July 2019

On the way home from a few days in Kelso we decided to visit Berwick on Tweed ( that famous English Town ) this morning and were pleasantly surprised to find it was the day of their Minden Day parade for The Kings Own Scottish Borderers at their old Barracks at Berwick

Amazed by the shear number of former soldiers on parade and one of the men giving out the roses,as well as being a Korea veteran had a General Service Medal and a Campaign Service Medal but most interesting he appeared to be wearing what looked like a Territorial Efficiency Medal with HAC ribbon.

Some pictures attached of what was a most enjoyable few hours.

Interesting photos Peter, so KOSB wore / wear a Minden rose, only the one, in red?
KOYLI used to wear one rose in white, RRF wear a pair of roses, one "rose" one primrose as I believe do the Royal Anglians.
Looks like a couple of RRF cadets in one of the photos?

Hello Leigh,

Yes the roses being given out and worn in the glengarries were all red ones.
The cadets were all from the Northumberland ACF but of course Berwick onTweed is in Northumberland.

Thanks, I've never really known which units wore or wear Minden Rose of whatever colour and in whatever number.
Not important but I'm just wondering if you noticed whether the RRF Cadets wore the RRF rose and primrose roses or the single red rose as per the KOSB's?

PWRR also wear a red rose for Minden Day. I transported 60 of them out to Afghanistan on a hercules after being back in the UK at optag some years ago.

PWRR inherited their Minden rose from the Hampshire Regiment, interesting that it's a single red one.

Leigh,

The cadets did not wear any roses.

I can confirm that KOYLI, then LI and now Rifles wear a single white rose on Minden Day (1st August) - this date also happens to coincide with Yorkshire Day so twice the reason to wear a white rose.

Thanks, I wonder why not. Perhaps it was thought inappropriate in some way, to wear the KOSB or RRF roses.
Possibly the RRF Cadets didn't wear them as it was the KOSB veterans "day" and it wasn't actually Minden Day for a few days.

Leigh

I suspect it is the fact that it is not yet Minden Day. I have often wondered which came first "Minden Day" or "Yorkshire Day" - I suspect that it was the former.

Remember though that there are three types of people in the world:-

1) Those who were born in Yorkshire
2) Those who wish that they had been born in Yorkshire
and
3) Those with no ambition

Yes Peter, it was established in 2004 for all veterans of the Malayan Emergency 1957-1966. After a lot of debating in Parliament over several years it was finally authorised for wear by British veterans in 2011.
