46th (Liverpool Welsh) RTR
I just picked up the medals for a member of the above who was KiA at El Alamein and is buried there.
I’d be very grateful if any of our RTR specialists would be kind enough to show me examples of the correct 8th Army arm badge that would have been worn. I believe it was a black desert rat, so that I know what to look for. I do know about the red dragon on green unit badge. Thanks in advance. Kevin |

At the time of Alamein neither the 7th Armoured's rat nor the 8th Army sign were worn on uniforms. They both arrived on uniforms after the end of the fighting in North Africa.
The first version of 7th Armoured rat then introduced was on khaki, the black backed version not adopted until the Division arrived in Britain in 1944. Jon |

Jon,
Thanks for that. Saves me the effort of looking for one. Kevin |

46th RTR was in the 23rd Armd Bde, but it seems the brigade's liver bird sign did not appear on uniforms until July 1943 (Mills, p.512).
