Default US unit crest

Good evening,

I think this badge is effectively that of 26th US Infantry Regiment. Could you confirm and date it ?

Thank you

According to Wikipedia, this is indeed the 26th Infantry Regiment's unit coat of arms, approved in 1973. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/26th_I...(United_States)

While I'm not an expert on DIs, the pictured badge is not the normal distinctive insignia of the 26th Infantry, at least not of the WWII era. Possibly it is a variation or a more modern version. What sort of fastener does it have: screw post, pin, or clutches?

Here a uniform that belonged to an acquaintance of my family. He was in the 26th Infantry at the end of the war. Note the spearhead insignia on the lapel of his Ike jacket. That is the usual 26th Infantry DI. (Of course, there are literally thousands of unofficial varieties of DIs, and yours could one of those...)

How big is it and, like the man asked, what kind of fastening does it have?

Cheers,
Dan.

The motto is intriguing - it was also Admiral Lord Nelson's personal motto and is that of the University of Southern California "Whoever merits the palms should bear them"

Those are clutch fasteners, which usually indicate post-WWII vintage for U.S. distinctive insignia.

This piece is indeed associated with the U.S. 26th Infantry Regiment. It is referred to as the Shield of the unit as opposed to the crest of the unit which Dobw correctly posted earlier. See photos below from Sawicki's Infantry Regiments of the U.S Army. However I have only seen the crest worn before.

Hi Laurent

I bought this 26th Infantry Regiment distinctive unit insignia whilst still at school in Dorset back in 1977, it was sold as possibly an Italian Police badge (!). After correctly ID’ing it I found that the unit had been stationed in the Purbeck area of Dorset, where I lived, prior to taking part in the invasion of Normandy. It measures 36 x 37mm - quite large for a DUI, and is heavier than most I have encountered. I'm not sure what it cost me but 30p rings a bell.

All the best

Graham
