7th Dragoon Guards
I have been looking closely at some of my 7th Dragoon Guards badges and I know that three of these came from reputable dealers. I would be interested in comments from others with more experience?

The bottom 2 with the void on the scroll are not the ORs cap badge pattern which were solid.
The void were found on officers' badges which were silver but also on arm badges. Unfortunately this design has been faked. |

I always thought the arm badges had the Latin scroll and not the English?

Indeed which why your lower 2 badges are a bit suspect and a rear picture would help.

The one on the left at the bottom Alan was purchased from a well known dealer. The one on the right at the bottom does feel like a fake

And the reverse of the arm badges, the first one is hallmarked 1898 and the other one is unhallmarked silver

What is the makers mark on the shank of the one top left?

It would be interesting to compare an Officers first pattern badge, can anyone post one to look at.
Another interesting bit is the underlines on the “th” of the 7th, some have just one line and some have two. |

I am afraid I don't like any of the 2 lugged badges and I personally would not buy any of them.
The 3 lugged cap badge and the 3 lugged arm badge is a lovely badge. |

Any idea of the maker of the hallmarked one ?

Hello
Having looked carefully at your images, I'd suggest you have only three that tick all the boxes as genuine contemporary ones. The upper two Cap Badges with slider(Tiptaft) and three loops, and the HM Silver Arm Badge which I think is made by Bent & Parker. The others I'm afraid appear to be Copies/spurious IMO. I think this basically concurs with Alan's sentiments. In general, I have noticed over the past few years that Dealers that were once noted as being reliable, are becoming less discerning regarding the quality/genuineness of the badges that they are selling, and I'd suggest collectors need to be more careful in their purchasing than ever. Regards Rob

Very true indeed, also perhaps a little sad, but, certainly a sign of the times these days.

Yes I totally agree too. There are still a few very good ones but I can think of a couple whose standards have slipped over the last year or two.
