A batch of the valise stars converted from lug to "flat tube" fittings are currently on eBay as "buy it now" for £7.99, or best offer.
As is so often the case with the CG ones (including one of my two) they have a dent in the centre, presumably put there to indicate that they were cast for scrap.
(As always with ebay I have no connection to these sales).

Were they ever subsequently worn after 1939?

Not that I'm aware of - presumably a Guards "specialist" will know for sure.

Thanks Leigh. I had it the wrong way round, I thought the bigger ones were the pagri badges.
Cheers,
Alex

Im not keen on that pagri badge either Leigh, looks very new. I don't reckon its gilding metal either, the colour's wrong imho.

I would be of the opinion that they were not, Foot Guards did not get their uniform back immediately after the war, but, I suppose it would all come down to datable photographic evidence of Greatcoat Order actually being worn, I discussed this with a former Queens Company Grenadier, who served from 1947, he had never seen the valise badges in use.

Possible fake/repro is something I've considered.
It looks better in the hand, the appearance as per the matt gilt like finish of an unused, unpolished badge.

From whatever sources I've read in the past I thought that the equipment wasn't worn after the start of WWII.

Some years ago there were lots of these badges with the centre dented for sale at the fairs, a skillfull "panel beater" could have restored them.

I am certainly in need of such a skilful craftsman, know you of any?

I've thought of taking my bashed in one to my local garage to see if they'd sort it out for me but haven't bothered to get around to it. I considered having a go it it myself using a hammer, padded chisel or screw driver and a wooden block, but again - lack of motivation.

I've just looked at the examples I have, all, sadly, have that same, awful dent.

It seems unique to the Coldstream, whacking the things with a sledge and dolly or whatever. I understand slashing cast clothing and headgear so nobody can re-present it for exchange for new, but valise plates were presumably being discarded as a piece of kit so why mutilate them?

The late Dave Cutforth restored a Fusilier grenade for me, sadly I'm not that good . . !
