Default Royal Montreal Reg't - what is this?

I have two embroidered badges to the Royal Montreal Regiment. One is the bullion officer's pattern. The other appears to be done in cotton thread. The two are near identical in size & reverse details.

The 'cotton' badge is very well executed, with a high level of detail. That, & the king's crown, make me doubt that it's anything modern. It's a mystery badge to me though - I've never seen one before.

Anyone know what this is? Who wore it, or why, or when?

The cotton thread version could have been worn on the ORs Coloured Field Service Cap. Although the badge was to be the 'authorized' pattern there was a fair bit of latitude as the cap was an item of private purchase.
The blue background supports this as the other headdress (beret or FSC) were khaki.
