I bought a South Notts Hussars cap badge with "Dowler Birmingham" on the slider, it has an overall darkenen finish, could any forum member tell me why?

Without seeing it, I would guess that it's the bronzed finish found on some Yeomanry ORs badges!

The reason for darkening (or bronzing) certain Yeomanry cap badges was to achieve a match with the buttons of the period. Remember, Hussars wore plain half-ball buttons which needed to be either polished for parade or darkened (bronzed) for service dress. David

Rob,

I have a similar Dowler-made badge to The Royal Horse Guards:

Is this the kind of finish you mean?

Regards,

Peter.

Default S. Notts Hussars

Sorry I can't post a picture, this badge only has a darkened finish on the front, at first I thought of service in Northern Ireland, but I don't think TA served there.

Thanks chaps for your help, as usual a great response.

Regards Rob

Is this RHG badge an AA version? Looks like bronze, or brass.

As well as the authorized AA 'Silver' version of the cap badge, normally worn by the 307th (South Nottinghamshire Hussars Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery (TA), there is also an AA 'Gold' version of the badge.

This is probably a manufacturing error, nevertheless it is a variant that some members may find interesting.

Eh, William.

Don't give too many of them there 'flash' unit names away - took me months to find all these...

By the way - that gold version maker mark is pretty rare.

Chris

Sorry to dampen any thoughts of a rare find but I would suggest a member of the unit or cadet badged to the SNH darkening it for exercise purposes.
