From the school website:
The Army Section of the RGSHW CCF is the oldest part of the Contingent having been formed in 1948 when the OTC unit (founded in 1908) at the school became part of the CCF. The RGSHW CCF Army section was parented by the Royal Green Jackets Regiment up until February 2007 when this unit became part of the Rifles, the British Army's elite Rifle Regiment. We now enjoy links with the 7th Batallion Rifles. I imagine they wore the RGJ badge before the Rifles regt one. Interestingly the Ox and Bucks LI became one of the RGJ Bns in 1958 so it is highly likely that the school wore the Bucks Bn badge prior to the RGJ one. The pressing question is when did they change and did they wear the q/c one at all? |

Is there a reference to the school in K&K or similar reference book ?

Not in K&K becasue it is not a design unique to the OTC. However 8th Foot did send me a copy of all old Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research Vol XVII's article by an Ernest J Martin which confirms that the school was using the Bucks Bn badge.

Well that is the annoying thing as it is not dated. It is post 1936 but pre CCFs and was written by the author after he wrote to all the OTCs in existence.
OTCs ended in 1948 so that is an 11 year window. Alan |

Ive just recieved this today, may solve the mystery.
"I've spoken to one of our recently retired officers, who was a cadet in that early post war period and then an Officer with the unit from the early 90s until last year. In the time you specified we wore the Buckinghamshire Battalion badge. I attach two examples - 1 with the Kings crown and 1 with the Queen's crown. So far as I am aware the shift to the RGJ badge in the 90s was never top authorised (in other words we never officially affiliated to an RGJ unit), and although it was worn by some of the Officers and SNCOs, as I recall when I was posted to the unit in 2004 the majority of Cadets wore a red and black cloth badge that was the Buckinghamshire Battalion Badge. In September 2007 when I took command of the unit I arranged with the then OC 7th Battalion the Rifles to formally affiliate to his unit, and since then we have worn the Rifles cap badge. The army section of the RGSHW CCF has recently been rebranded as Youens Company by the new OC Army." Yours sincerely J W TITCHEN Sqn Ldr RAFVR(T)OC RGSHW From what the OC has sent me ,it would seem to indicate that the black Bucks Btn badge should be labelled as High Wycombe Grammar School. |

Hi,
I can confirm that the Black a/a Buckinghamshire Battalion badge was also worn by the Buckinghamshire Cadet Battalion (ACF) up to the late 1970's when they adopted the RGJ Badge. The "used" look of the high points on some badges would probably be down to the practice of Officers and SNCO's who would scrape the paint off of the high points to show a "silver" finish a fairly common rifleman practice and one I have done myself on my "combat" RGJ badge many years ago. The Bucks ACF wore the green "rifle" beret and wore the badge in its a/a form whereas I believe that the Schools wore the cloth badge on a blue beret. Regards Steve |

Welcome to the forum. Steve, I have been doing some work in A/A badges and would like a few more details on this one if possible. Were you a member of the Bucks ACF that wore the Buckinghamshire Battalion A/A cap badge? Also, do you know when the badge was first worn? I see that you state that it was replaced in the late 1970's. Many Thanks!!! Chris |
