The badge with the shortest existence in the British Army?
The Tyneside Scottish were officially authorised by the War Office on 14th October 1914. The badge is shown below.
A new badge was designed and issued in January 1915. Question: Is this little badge the one with the shortest life span in the British army? Best wishes Gordon |

Hi 1stTankie
I think this regiment had 4 different badges over a short period of time, cheers Malc

You're right about the variety but the other three survived much longer. I'm trying to find out if there were any other badges in the Army as a whole with a shorter life span than the 1st edition. Any thoughts? Best wishes Gordon |

How about the Hants and IoW TA badge, worn I've been told for a very short period of time unlike the other 1960/70s Territorial badges that never made it off the shelves...?

Hi Matti
Sounds probable. Would you know how long it lasted? Gordon |

I sawe the officers badge on Roy Floods stall at a militaria fair and enquired. He suggested that it might only have been worn for a matter of months.

1st/1st London Divisional cyclist company
The 1st/1st London Divisional cyclist company was formed in February 1916 and I believe lasted until May 1916, this may be a contender for the shortest worn badge.

If I am right the London cyclists managed to have a badge made and was it in more than one form?

1st/1st London Divisional cyclist company
Certainly the other ranks had a cap badge, as to whether an OSD exists I do not know.

There was a Yorkshire Yeomanry Squadron that was very short lived back in the "Options for Change" Days in the early 1990s.... it was apart of the QOY I think?
(Nice badge....shame about the life span!) Take out the LI Horn & Scroll and replace with RY and you would have a cracking Royal Yeomanry badge....... better than the new one anyway. KOYYLI YORKSHIRE YEOMANRY

This badge was worn by the Light Infantry company in Wakefield for a very short period before it was dumped in lieu of the Light Infantry cap badge on the formation of the East & West Riding Regiment when the Company in question became Minden Company in that Regiment. I remember going in to the CQMS stores and seeing a big box of these badges just sitting on the shelf, I wonder what ever happened to then all, they are probably still in the same box in the same store?

it was NEVER part of the QOY - it was a regiment in it's own right (use the search button for a full account of the unit). It existed from 3rd August 1996 until 1st July 1999 - a little under three years. I believe it may hold the record for the shortest lived PEACETIME cap badge. OC14 |

Thanks for the Knowledge, its was a bit of a puzzler. In the RY we knew of their existance ..... but never met them on excercise etc.
I think "The Dorset Yeomanry" was a shorter lived Regiment (1997-99)...... but the still exist as a Squadron of the Wessex yeomanry now.
