RAF pre war AIRGUNNERS badge...genuine ??
Hi all,
I have read various debates regarding three or two post pre war airgunners badges...this one turned up in a local antiques fair ..cleared out with some wartime jewlry from a local estate... Yes it is die struck, sheer marks to side ..it has a lip at bottom and is a two lug type. Under magnification it certainly appears correct ,rather than artificially aged... Interestingly the wings either side of the bullet are solid, now these I have not seen before ...those copies i have seen appear stamped out .... .....i note from various forums and discussion threads that there are a few different patterns of these gunners badge ,including the RAAF versions which DOES have a lip and some with two lugs ...so anyway can anyone confirm this ones a good one or does anyone have a similar in there collection...?? many thanks steve |

RAAF versions certainly came in brass or gilt to 1940 when bronzed versions began to appear and on two lugs.
I've never been convinced on the lugs argument. For one thing I have seen weighty brass badges with clear wear suggesting active use, having two lugs, and others from personal effects. Likewise, if you were properly reproing a badge I can't see why you'd add two lugs if the original had three. I'll have to check my RAF and RAAF versions. Not certain of the solid wings, should be die struck generally. |

I agree with SAS1
My issue would be the solid wings also. |
