I have been rereading "The Last Ditch" by David Lampe, 1968.
The vehicle marking is mentioned a couple of times. Page 74 "Soon either a civilian car or an army vehicle with a red and white plate bearing the GHQ Home Forces identification number "490" would turn up to take the new arrivals to the head-quarters." Page 124 "But only when they had been collected by another "490" vehicle and had been taken to Hannington Hall," Red can look very dark in black and white images? Rob |

Agreed. So possibly white numerals and horizontal bar on red ground? Mike

Yes, but it is more probably than definitely I suspect.

AU INSIGNIA
Thank you guys for your input - you are right
I can confirm this as I have found an Auxiliary Units 1941 Christmas Card drawn by Captain Ian Fenwick. He was the AUX Intelligence Officer for Somerset then moved on to SOE and in June 1944 was parachuted into France as Commander of 'D' Squadron 1st SAS miles behind enemy lines. Sadly he was killed in action on 7 August during Operation 'Gain'. Photo shows part of the card with insignia A WHITE 490 ON A RED BACKGROUND THE FIRST VERSION OF THE HOME FORCES FORMATION SIGN |

He was a very talented cartoonist - the RGJ Museum has a large collection of his work. Mike
