Hi bryan the episode i seen showed some great footage of the air conflict of ww1 and the change from recconnaisance and aerial photographic mapping missions to aerial combat and long range bombing it had a very good 20 minutes on the RNAS how before carriers where introduced they would launch the aircraft off 30ft of boarding mounted on the ships guns. It then went onto the formation of an airship force, a call went out to ships captains to volunteer their most able junior officers, the airships where initially introduced to spot uboats they also tried bombing the uboats from them without much success, they where found to be very vulnerable to enemy aircraft and the issue of parachutes was given to the crews, this not the case to fixed wing pilots as airplanes where deemed far to expensive to lose and they didnt want the pilots jumping from their planes when not necessary.
Hope this gives you an insight and its aired soon for you over there,im sure it will be repeated here. Paul |

RNAS Airship
Hello all
There is an excellent book on the RNAS airships of the Great War. 'Battlebags: British Airships of the First World War' by Ces Mowthorpe. Originally published in 1995 and reprinted in 1998 by Sutton Publishing. ISBN 0905 778 138 As it states on the dust jacket, "Battlebags is the first book to record and describe in detail every single airship built or used by Great Britain during the First World War. The background to each class is given together with details on individual airships, including where they were built and stationed, their known crews, plus technical information and particulars of notable flights and total hours flown". It also contains over 150 photographs of airships, their crews, and ground personnel. It's a very good book and copies of it should be available through the usual web sites. Strangely enough, not one photograph shows anyone wearing the 'RNAS Airship Badge' that started this topic. Isn't that odd? Pete |

Photograph of possibly part of an airship crew, RNAS Airship Coxn, RNAS Artisan and two General Service RNAS Ratings. All wear the red cap badge anchor and crown, worn by ratings below CPO.

Actually, why would they need a different badge if they where royal navy ratings anyway!

I seem to remember seeing this badge at a fair recently. I think it was Camden and I recall it had a fairly hefty price tag on it. I also seem to remember a couple of other badges as well. Phil (Phil2M) was with me at the time, so hopefully he will see this thread and be able to help.... sorry I can't be of more assistance, Andy |

It was the same, mate, it was at Camden. Seller was asking 150 if I remember correctly. I know we both decided to steer clear of it.

The vendor is old club badges in Ramsgate, probably attends shows in the Uk, perhaps that is the vendor you saw Andy.
Did the badge actually exist Phil & do you know of a good one if it was in existence? Bryan Last edited by RCN; 23-04-13 at 07:24 PM. |

Hi,
I've never seen one in a reference book, I have only seen the one in the flesh. I suspect they are fantasy badges???????
