The idea was even patented so they took it seriously, the bike in this case is a rare OHV Norton single. The American actually moved the twist grip throttle on their Harleys to the left side so they could keep control and use a gun as they went along.

A more up to date version - double crewed, cheaper to power and more environmentally friendly (if you discount the machine gun).
