Default Victorian Rifle Brigade Militia ?

I have had this badge lying in a drawer for quite a while . I am assuming that it is a Victorian Rifle Brigade Militia cap badge. I think that I consigned it to a drawer bacause of the horrible relug job. I am starting to wonder whether it wouldnt be worthwhile to have it properly reinstated.
So can anyone confirm that it is Rifle Brigade Militia and is it genuine. There are so many fakes out there, one can never tell.
Many thanks
Mike

It's certainly a generic Rifle Brigade badge.

Does not look from the pics as if it were ever blackened?

I think the blacking has come off during the lug repair. It's a £40-ish badge and worth getting it repaired properly including re-blacking.

It has a European crown not a British royal crown.

Thanks for the interest and the replies to my post.
The badge looks never to have been blackened as there is no black residue anywhere.
Has anyone any thought as to when this was worn ?
Regards
Mike

The 'Guelphic Crown' is a German type and was in honour of the Prince Consort (Prince Albert), in whose name the regiment received its secondary title 'The of Prince Consort's Own'.

It certainly appears to be a good striking. There were no militia battalions directly affiliated to the Rifle Brigade before 1881, but after that date several English, Welsh and Irish militia battalions were linked formally with the 4 regular battalions. In glengarries the regiment wore a blackened brass badge with 4 honour scrolls, 2 each side of the wreath. After 1898 the badge adopted for the Field Service Cap (FSC) was white metal and it would have been correct for the militia battalions of the regiment to wear reversed metal and no honours on the wreath. In general then the badge appears correct for the period 1898 to 1908, but whether or not it is genuine is another matter that I cannot comment on.

Mike,
it is certainly a badge worth repairing/restoring, although I'm not sure about getting it "Blackened"? The one I have although toned to the front looks like it could possibly have been Gilding-metal? Perhaps in contrast to the Wm of the Regulars as Toby points out?

I agree, I don't think it should be blackened either.

Here's mine.

I would like to post an image of my version but I don't have one, I would support the theory that it would not be blackened !

Ivan, get that verdigris off your badge as soon as ??
