DZ flashes have a function in assisting parachute units assemble quickly on a drop zone. These units will be separated into different aircraft(“tactical loading”) for a drop to avoid the loss of one aircraft significantly affecting any one unit, and so individuals will be widely dispersed on a drop zone. On the DZ they enable you to identify other members of your unit quickly and follow them to your particular assembly point. Having said that, they are also yet another way of separating the airborne warriors from the ‘hats’ and are an ‘ally’ fashion statement! For a air-landing unit like the PWRR there is no real tactical need for them but they are worn for conformity within the brigade.
However, just like the TRFs now worn by the rest of the Army, DZ flashes enable soldiers to identify which other units they are dealing with when everyone is wearing a helmet, so they do have a practical purpose.
