Smile Royal Fusiliers WM QVC

Hi all,

A recent addition to my infantry variants collection - a QVC period Royal Fusiliers in WM with lovely old black copper lugs. As per K&K 595 and I believe that the WM version was worn by the 1st Volunteer Battalion. This one matches the KC version I have in WM.

Any other details anyone can provide if it is for the 1st VB RF would be appreciated, regards Dean.

Hi Dean,

Lovely badge, I have the KC and the QVC collars ?

Wilf is showing a lovely set of QVC cap and collars and refers to them as just RF Vols, perhaps he can enlighten us ???

Dave.

Dean,

1st & 2nd VB had an integral numbered scroll on their post 1902 badges, I've never seen similar QVC versions. Personally I think this badge (as well as the KC one which turns up) is 3rd VB, the 4th were formed in 1904 so can safely be ruled out.

Dean, ref the badge colour: You might find that the WM badge you have shown looks more like GM/brass (at least to my eyes it does) due to the red in the background being absorbed. I tried out a few experiments using various coloured backgrounds and found that black velvet seems to high light WM/silver/silvered badges better (or at least the image colour more closely resembles the badge colour), whereas a dark (i.e. Royal) blue seems to emphasise silver/gilt badges. Nice badge by the way.

Many thanks to all - will re-label as 3rd VB RF, it is always good to have the Forum members set one on the path to knowing just what a badge is.

Dave I will re-photograph my WM badges on black velvet as on review they do look GM - I will put both the KC and QVC WM versions alongside it with a nice Edwardian KC GM and see how the colours come out.

Thanks again to all, Dean.

Dean, Here are two examples of a NF WM furcap with a black and a red background. Had I taken the pic against a lot of red (i.e. had it been fretted/voided etc), the red would have saturated the badge a lot. The black background comes out much better - for WM or silver/silvered badges. A very dark (which I use a lot in my album) blue seems perfect, but needs a morning (here) cloudy sky - which isn't apparent at the moment....
Of course the old patina on the badge also helps.... Hope this helps.
Well the sun 'went away' so here is the same badge on a blue background.
David

Thanks Dave,

A most illustrative comparison thanks. I will re-photograph mine when I get a chance against black to start with but will pick up some dark blue cloth and try that.

Cheers and very much appreciated, Dean.

Wink RF re-visited

Hi all,

Here are my RF badges against a black background as suggested by David. Sadly at night so lighting less than ideal but work interfering with badge collecting yet again.

Here we have WM KC and QVC 4th Battalion badges (as per WM K&K 595 & 597); and GM KC (K&K 597), GM QVC (K&K 595 but K&K 596 Broderick cap size I believe) and BZ KC (K&K 597).

Will post a pic later from Forum pal Jumbo of his WM QVC (WM K&K 595) but smaller sized Broderick cap badge (again I believe this is what it is).

Cheers Dean
