I think item works OK as a badge as such does refer to an integral part of head dress if not uniform. After researching a little around the anodising process on the weekend I do have to change to definition to be: An item of head dress used by various organisational units of the British Army composed of anodised aluminium, initially colour dyed by the anodising process and susequently (as required) by electroplating.
