Dorset's badge, army number on slider, who's is it?

My Dad, bless him, picked up this Dorset's cap badge for me from a jumble sale, he got it for a pound!!
When he got home, he realised there was an army number on the slider.
The number is 5730382

He would love to know who it belonged to, as he lives in Dorset.
Can someone help please?

Can only say it is a Dorsetshire Regiment number issued between 1920-1942. Good on him for finding it. Regards, Paul.

Hi. Suggest you drop an email to the The Keep Military Museum in Dorset. From their website it appears they have the regimental enlistment registers for the 1920 - 1939 period and they will be in number order like the RA attestation books on findmypast. Kind regards, Andrew.

Interesting find. I once had a grouping of WW1 badges on a piece of cloth. When it all "fell apart" I saw that at least one slider had the owner's initials marked on it in a somewhat simple style ("B.E.B." seems to come readily to mind....).

I was told by an old army man that this was a fairly common practice to stop the "appropriation" of badges by others.

Anyone seen any other examples?

Yea, he goes to a lot of charity things, he's picked up a couple of good bits in the past.
I'll get onto the Keep in Dorchester and if I find something I'll let you all know.

Have a look on Forces War Records and also try Find My Past. I have tracked down 2 servicemen in the past from numbers stamped onto the badge sliders.
