Default 1st Armoured Regiment Badge

According to this site http://www.army.gov.au/1armd/History.asp othe 1 AR badge "...depicts a Mark V Tank emblazoned on a road wheel and crossed lancers (sic) with boomerang beneath, surmounted by the Queen's Crown".

The circular device described as a road wheel above is not unique in badge heraldry and is often referred to as a circlet. In the Australian Army the QMI, RAAMC and RACT badges have a similar device, as does the RAAF badge and numerous British Army badges - none of which would have a desire to display a road wheel. The circlet is also applicable to Scottish clan chieftans and armigers badges and looks very much like the alleged road wheel - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_crest_badge.

I remember it being described as a 'belt' during my first promotion course in early 1969. Belts, or straps, complete with buckle are also common heraldic devices.

So.... is it a circlet, roadwheel or something else?

I'll be interested to hear your thoughts.

I guess the circlet symbolises the road wheel (and looks better than a road wheel too IMHO).
