Can anyone tell me if this looks genuine just by looking at the picture. Also it doesn't have a clip on the rear just two metal hoops. Additionally is it possible to tell the age? I am new to this and this is my first badge.

I haven't received them yet, there are no measurements on the discription. I don't know if its possible to tell from a picture? Bought it on Ebay, then decided to look into it. Back to front I know.

I can't tell from the photo's, is it supposed to be a cap badge ? or an arm badge ??

A point though, it is rare to get the spring pin with a badge when buying from ebay....

PS having looked again, it seems to be an arm badge, if so, it should be a fraction over 60mm in height, there will be pleny of examples from different members, her are mine, both silver plated ??

I suspect it is an arm badge,That was why I asked what size the badge is.

Its described has a cap badge but from what I have read on this forum, it is probably an arm badge. The thing that concerns me most is that it is described as brass. From what I have seen on this forum they are usually silver in colour. The seller, sells a bit of everything so I am not sure if he knows himself.

There are brass one about, I believe they shouldn't be in brass but I don't know enough to argue, others are convinced they are fine........good luck !

Should be in WM or HMS or silver plated (as Daves are).

WM = White metal
HMS = Hallmarked Silver

White metal, Hall Marked Silver, you will also see (once you get the full blown bug..... 'P' for silver plated (in the main these are officers badges). 'Sterling' or 'Sterling Silver' - 'Silver', on its own, is not a good sign.
Would also suggest you have a look through 'Makers Marks' projects - item 6 at the top of the page and item 5 for examples of genuine badges.
Other terms use include GM - gilded metal (not gilt!), looks more like brass. 'Frosted' silver - a lovely finish - you will see it used in various members albums.
Also note that 'unmaked silver' is also used (auction houses are not allowed - in these 'PC' times - to state this - they have to say 'White Metal'.
The give-away (of course) for anything that is 'silver' is the tarnish. Worse on HMS items than plated ones.
I am sure the others will also contribute.
