Default Uncle Fred RASC

We buried uncle Fred Phillips today, He married my mothers elder sister in 1940 ,
He served with the RASC attached to Guards Armoured Div , Landed at Arramanches and made it all the way to Germany despite doing his bit in the slit trenches when the Guards were rested, A few things he told me stuck in my mind, During Market garden the Germans were blowing bridges behind them as they made their way up to the road, He also remembered stripping lights from the American gliders and rigging them on the trucks. He remembered how skilled the German mortars were as any movement or noise near the front would bring down a volley of mortar shells on the position (the most frightening time of his life) . Awarded the MBE for services to his church, village community, and Royal British Legion. My cousins passed his hat on to me for safe keeping.
