"Rising Sun" Myth.
Two questions.
1. Where or when did rising sun replace correct trophy of arms? 2. Is it a myth all slidered badges are Light Horse? If so who started that one? I'm sure Infantry used slidered examples too but good dealers push the Light Horse. Or are they correct? Thanks. TRT |

The Rising Sun badge was first worn as an Australian emblem during the Boer War by the Australian Commonwealth Horse and then by members of the Australian Imperial Force during World War 1.
As for the myth of the Rising Sun badge with the slider (and my pet hate) .... It's described by many (including many unscrupulous sellers on eBay) as a Light Horse Badge however it is only an indication that it was English made. This badge was worn by infantry, light horse, artillery, ASC as well as others. Most of the English made Rising Sun badges would have been issued to soldiers going to the Western Front. Consider this - the vast majority of Light Horse units served in Palestine with only the 13th Light Horse Regiment and two squadrons of the 4th Light Horse Regiment seeing service on the Western Front. Given that only a small proportion of the AIF that served in the Western Front would have been Light Horse and most would have had Australian made badges, I dare say its stretching the truth by a long way to describe these badges as "Light Horse badges". Unless someone had providence that such a badge was worn by a Light Horseman, then I would consider such a description as being false. A mate of mine who is a forum member here also has a slouch hat that has a hole in the brim for a slider version Rising Sun badge. I hope this helps. Mick

G'day TRT & Mick
Here we go again ! I have in my posession a family collection, my 2nd Cousins husbands, who served in WW!, I have his medals and all his papers. there are 4 rising suns, 1 slidered marked Tiptaft, one with a large pin fastening and 2 with lugs, he was in the 22nd Battalion and served on the Western Front. I have also rescently handled a complete but very battered slouch hat with a slidered rising sun still attached, there is a small slot cut in the up turned brim, this man was in the 24th Battalion. The hat was brought in by his daughter together with some other items including a Turkish 3 pouch ammunition set. He served on Gallipoli. So I believe that this clearly dispells the "Myth" Regards Phil. |

Phil thanks. There is also a comment I found on Internet all Tiptaft badges marked only on sliders are fake! Rubbish! Forums and Internet sure do create these myths.
Appreciate your comments. Thanks TRT |

just to clarify things, the slouch hat you described of the gallipoli vet surely would have carried onto service in france, maybe even training and re equipped in the UK where the slidered rising sun would have been issued. i agree with all that has been said. slidered rising suns were made in the UK and not australia. they came unmarked, marked on the body and not slider, the slider and not body and on both body of the badge and slider. they were for general issue, issued to any serviceman regardless of unit and rank. bc |

Just to clear this up my Tiptaft is marked both on the slider and also on the back of the badge in the flat area between the suns rays and the crown. Regards Phil. |

I had a good look at this hat and theres no evidance of there having been holes for lugs, the slidered badge was still on the hat and looks as if it has always been there. l will get to have another look at this hat and do some photos and will let you know. I also have access to an origonal LH hat at another RSL and will get a look at it as well and do some better photos and also let you know. Regards Phil. |
