I have one of similar construction (and another the same with the attached scroll broken off). I've always taken them to be genuine with the same die being used for cap and collar badge, the separate scroll being added to make cap rather than collar.

Hi BC,

These are often described as the earlier Sussex Imperial Yeomanry cap badge (1902-1908) with the scroll added on becoming Sussex Yeomanry in 1908.

To date, I've not seen an example of a SIY cap badge this small- although I have at least two other sizes.

The examples I have with added scroll appear to be from the same dies as the collar badges. The 'curly ends' at N, E, S & W are also the same design as the earlier badges (I've identified three variations of these so far). The crowns are also similar, sitting above the lower part, rather than superimposed.

By the time these appear with sliders they more commonly seem to be of one piece construction.

KR,

Pete.
