Was there a sweetheart brooch for the Sherwood Foresters?
Hi All,
I've looked through countless images, but I've never found a sweetheart brooch for the Sherwood Foresters (or Notts & Derby). Have I missed it? Did they ever produce one? Many thanks, + Anthony

Unless someone else responds, I know someone who has an enormous collection of brooches but won't be able to speak to them until next week. I would have thought, that the answer is probably yes though.... david |

I would have thought there would be sweetheart brooches for any regiment
that served in ww1 or ww2. Gordon

As usual ... THANKS! All the stuff ye sent me previously is now up on the site methinks. I don't think I ever saw anything for SF, or Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters as it became.... And I was at Crich Memorial this year for the Annual Remembrance Service of SF, WFR & as it is today the Mercian Regt and I didn't spot one there either! So .. did you get the snow in Luxembourg, if not I can throw ye over some! + Anthony

Now this brings something else to the forefront in my mind .... Does this mean that Sweetheart brooches were only made for WW1 & WW2, or have they been produced since .... What I'm trying to get through my thick skull is could there be not just a Sherwood Forester sweetheart brooch, but also a Worcestershire & Sherwood Forester (amal 1971) or even a Mercian Regt made in later years? You might be noticing that I'm a complete and TOTAL novice! But always willing to learn ... + Anthony

£5 inc p and p to Uk for this ( obviously rare ) sweethearts brooch to members of the Forum.
P.B. As an aside great to see the membership numbers slowly creeping up and a lot of new members adding to posts/threads.

Hi team, interesting thread. Is this what we are talking about and I would think that yes they were made post WW2 as the pin on this looks more modern.

I'd be very surprised if there was not a brooch to every regiment and Corps . Thye were definitely still on sale in NAAFIs in 1958 as I bought one to Th eNorth Staffords at Whittington Barracks then of the same type as the Sherwood Foresters , a small badge on a white disc.

Sweetheart badges are still availablre today. Some PRIs, museum shops stock them and jewellers will have bespoke ones made for you in precious metals and stones. The biggest sellers in the Royal Anglian museum when I volunteered there were lapel badges that could equally be called sweetheart brooches depending on who was wearing it.

It's really interesting seeing your sweetheart brooch as not only is it Sherwood Foresters BUT it also shows the star in red, which I have never seen before! Thanks for showing that, I appreciate it. + Anthony

My Dad was at Whittington Bks too - when it was South Staffs I think! We were posted to Heath Avenue, just outside one of the entrances near the (new) NAAFI - built outside the Bks but in the accommodation area. That said ... NEVER heard of them on sale in the NAAFI! This is really bugging me! I was in the NAAFI as a kid more times than I care to imagine and I never noticed them. Lesson: Anthony y'ejit, open y'eyes! + Anthony

Generally the badges seem to be titled differently now. So-called lapel badges are often made up in an enameled form that is very reminiscent of the old sweetheart brooches and recent advances in mock and real enameling has made them much cheaper too. Put "military lapel badges" into a search engine such as google and a variety of different badges, old and modern can be found for just about every regiment (e.g. ecsnaith.com and ). "Old Comrades Badges" also gets some results.
For the more finely made and thus expensive sweetheart brooches, made specifically for women and ranging in construction from Sterling Silver, to Silver and enameled, Gold, and Gold and enameled, are available from a number of specialist jewellers such as Bickertons and Garrards, as just two that are well known. There are others. Last edited by Toby Purcell; 05-05-11 at 10:50 AM. |

Bosley's
Anthony, if you go to Bosley's home page they have a link to a Regimental Brooches shop ( run by his wife I think ) - there are three examples to the Sherwoods listed, although one appears to have been sold. Cheers Tim

I've actually been in touch with Bosleys ... and I now have their badges on my website (under armed forces badges .. sweethearts) - which is seriously kind of them! Why GURKHARIFLES ... were you one? My Dad was in the Sherwood Foresters > Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters > 6 GR. All the best, + Anthony
