Astounding items. You've stumbled on a dream field. Next thing is to clean, separate and catalogue. I would keep this trove intact, at least until researched. There may be unrecorded items.

Cheers gtb what would be the process for cleaning separating and cataloging .on coins I find I usually use renaissance wax

This numberd 31 should buff quite nicely I would not attempt buffing the buttons though.

I have had good results with shoulder titles in the past as we're dealing with a flat surface.

If this happened in England I would start researching any military or manufacturing connections at the County Record Office, and the local papers of the time.

However, I don't know if this advice would hold true for County Fermanagh. It is worth looking into anyway.

My rationale when deciding to clean (polish) an artefact is to leave the underside as is, i.e. with original patina

Thinking about this some more, and if privacy is not an issue, it might be worth contacting "Making History" a programme broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

People contact them about a local or family history question. The show find an expert to look into it, and listeners can learn from it.

For example, somebody contacted them to ask about treatment for head wounds in WW1, as their relative had had a plate put in his head after being wounded.

This was of interest to me as one of my grandfathers had a silver plate put in his head after being wounded by shell fire in 1917:

It's definitely a thought but I'm not sure if the landowner would want the publicity to him they are only old buttons but I will mention it next time I'm there
