Royal Welsh Fusiliers Fur Cap Grenades
Something I've been looking to complete for a few years.
This one turned up in the post this morning, a fur cap grenade for a Volunteer Officer in the RWF. This now completes the set. L-R Regular, Militia & Volunteer. Hwyl fawr, Kevin |

Yes, very nice.
It looks as though the actual grenades from the regular and the volunteer badges are from the same die ? Is the militia one from an earlier date ? |

Thanks all for the appreciation, but of course as we all know I am only the current custodian.
Julian, There are in fact many differences, not least of which being that the size of the ball of the grenade differs between all three, the regular one being the biggest. The height of the militia example is the tallest and the PoW plumes are of a slightly different pattern to the other two. In addition it has two screw post to the rear as opposed to the other two which only have a top post and double blades to the bottom. My thoughts are private commision piece as it is clearly of a higher quality. I also have examples to the senior NCOs which are of a standard pattern albeit of different metals. Needs more research, as always. Cofion gorau, Kevin |

Kevin,
I also found/find that the senior NCO version's tend to be "almost but not quite" of the same quality as the officers. Thats a very nice collection you have their - keep it up. Rgds, David |

Beauties and interesting to see the different dimensions too.

Here are the other pattern fur cap grenades for comparison.
1. Volunteer senior NCO grenade on the fur cap. 2. Regular & Volunteer senior NCO examples. 3. Other ranks Regular & Volunteer. So far I have not come across any militia examples for senior NCOs or ORs. I cannot actually see how they would have done one in reverse metals for the ORs militia as these grenades are of one piece construction. Hwyl, Kevin Last edited by 41st; 12-05-14 at 06:05 AM. |

I think that it's about time I updated my album for the RWF. I'll get on it now that the long haired sergeant major has got her kitchen extension.

Managed to add to this recently with an Officers’ collar badge to the Militia Batt’n.
I’ve shown this with the fur cap grenades for senior NCOs just to indicate the difference in the pattern of grenades between Commisioned Officers and NCOs. |
