stuck these on the other thread too. cairo assayed, thinner, hand made loops, as shaun commented looks struck to me. busy researching accompanying photos and docs. Guy at PPA assoc knows of another hallmarked.

the surface 'bubbling' also occurs on die struck badges as the 'male' die wears, they should be periodically polished. martin

I don't mind collectors giving their opinion in fact I welcome it, but the Popski badge I put on to the forum I've had since the Seventies!

15+ years you say, how much of a tolerance do you put on the "+" sign?

i spoke too soon.
i will check with john when the PPA die was made. it was 1974 when i first found the SAS, SIH and a hundred others being made from original dies at ten bob a pop. there were at least another 3 people having re-strikes made at the time.
the PPA in whitemetal only turned up in volume according my dad in the 80's but he and i recall seeing them well before that date and not knowing what they were until the K&K vol2 came out (1978?) hence my 15+
as you say my comments are just an opinion based on the photos, it does look like one of johns but if it was bought in the early seventies it can't be.

not seen that on johns ppa as all his repro in brass or w/m.
but a 'silver' stamp was used on some of the badges made during the short silver runs (10/20 or so of each) incorporated during standard re-striking that ralph did 1976ish on likes of welsh guards pugree, GMGC etc i can't recall all the badges now but i do remember the "silver" being on some and not others of the same badge. i recall it was small, about 3/4" long.
john & ralph used to travel/sell together in london.
just got johns number again will ask if any were done in silver and/or marked or if he knows anyone else who has done them.
i do know that these badges in silver (not saying ppa was one) were made at the request of a London dealer. some badges (again not saying ppa) were also enamelled i recall.

Incidentally, my Popski badge that passed to Hugh King from Popski himself at a Military Historical Society meeting (both Hugh and Popski attended the same meetings - see Peter Brydon post regarding these giftings in post 24 of this thread) is totally different from any other Popski badge I have seen - I acquired it from Hugh King collection. Hugh himself, told me the story of how he came to possess it. possibly a prototype - but here it is, cast iron provenance. Hugh did also mention many of the SF badges in Kipling and King were not original (specifically Raiding Support Regiment). Any thoughts on this PPA badge appreciated - early, a prototype, or what?

A great many common fakes like yours were struck in and marked ‘silver’ by an infamous repro-er commonly known by his eBay name ‘badgeman’ a number of years ago.

To my knowledge such badges are indeed silver, so the good news is it’s worth £0.562 per gram at todays silver price.
