Brighton Grammar School Photograph
I believe this young Chap is from Brighton Grammar. Photograph taken in Brighton. Anyone agree?

Possibly but there are no OTC S/Ts so he may be a Sussex Cadet or even dressing up.
BGS OTC was a bronzed badge and it was the CCF who wore the silver one so I think he is probably not BGS. |

Hi Billy,
It's almost certainly not BGS as the badges tended to be smaller, like Royal Sussex Regiment OSD badges, with one strike having quite a flat plume (I've numerous examples in my album). It's more likely to be Eastbourne if one compares the distinct size and shape of the badge. I hope this helps. Do you know when and/ or where the photo was taken? Kind Regards, Pete |

Hi Billy,
The scroll in the picture also appears to be tripart, whereas the BGS scroll is a continuous curve. KR, Pete |

This is Brighton College OTC in 1914 according to their website and to me it looks like they are wearing Bimetal Royal Sussex cap badges. One rounded OTC title is clearly visible on a shoulder. |

This Brighton College OTC is the one in the picture I would suggest rather than the Surrey Cadet title which would also have been worn with the Royal Sussex cap badge.
The 3rd title is BGS which did not exist until 1929 so can be ruled out. BGS badges were bronzed during the OTC period where as the ones in the group photo are all shiny. Is there any date or photographer's details on your photo in Post 1 Billy? Last edited by Alan O; 30-04-23 at 01:55 PM. |

Hi Billy and Alan,
My pair of BGS shoulder title in blackened brass for reference. I don't think that BGS was officially affiliated to the Royal Sussex Regiment (I could be wrong on that). The 4th Bn TF was based in Worthing and the likes of Lancing College (both being in W. Sussex) was affiliated to them. I agree with Alan that Brighton College would not have worn 4 C S/Ts. Brighton College was affiliated to the old 1st VB, (based in Brighton) which became the 6th Bn TF, but was disbanded in 1919, so I'm not sure of their affiliation after this time. In 1st VB days, they wore white metal collars with garter scrolls as for the 1st VB and apparently, "other badges" of the VB (Churchill, 2002 p.159). I'm not sure when they started wearing their own distinctive, bronzed cap badge. I hope this helps. KR, Pete Last edited by Tiger Pete; 01-05-23 at 08:27 AM. |

Pete
Thanks. It seems that Brighton College continued their affiliation with the Royal Sussex after 1908 and wore their cap badge until at least 1914. I have emailed the College's archivist t ask if he know when the school cap badge was introduced. It is a shame there is no s/t in post 1 because that would have been definitive. Alan |
