Hi Team
Can you ID the era which this SBS badge was issued. Ive tried to look and could not find any equivalent to go by. The ones I've seen range from WWII-50 or Modern 2000 era and up. This came in a group of Kiwi Parachute and SAS wings c 1980-2000 There was also a padded SAS wing which is British made but was also issued to Kiwis who trained and also were badged. cheers Phill |

The wings shown on the left looks to be a modern and not very accurate copy of the SAS wings issued in WWII. The wings on the right appear to be the standard SAS wings issued from the late 1970s onwards.
When you say “SBS wings” please be aware that the Army Commando Special Boat Section wore standard parachute wings in WWII. The part of that unit absorbed by the SAS into what became the Special Boat Squadron in WWII were issued SAS wings. The more modern Special Boat Service (largely Royal Marines) wear their own new wings which resemble the SAS wings but were deliberately shaped to resemble a canoe. They are subdued for combat dress and in silver and gold for Lovat dress and blues, so not blue and white. Last edited by Colin S; 07-02-23 at 09:26 AM. |

don't like the first, 2nd is 70's, the notched parachute suggests early for this pattern

I post copies of the modern (21st century) SBS wings. I contradict my earlier posting in that the wings on the right are blue and white. They are intended for the stone shirt

Thanks Colin,Jerry for the input.
I literally no nothing on SBS insignia so thats good to point out what a modern era era SBS "Canoe" style wing looks like. And now I see what you mean by modern copy of SAS WWII wing. It was never WWII in my opinion but a friend suggested SBS 1970's. I like 1960-1990's era wings Para or SAS. cheers Phill |

Post WWII, until the 2003 pattern wings came in, SBS wore normal RM para wings (if they bothered)...

To add, for a brief period, RM Special Forces signallers also wore the post-2003 SBS wings - until they were forced to adopt the army pattern Special Forces Communicators wings.
RM SF medics wore the standard wings, but again now wear the 'army' style SF medics wings. |
