Any idea if the beret has a leather or fabric band or no band, or if the beret is a one-piece please? Presumably it'll be a one piece if knitted?

This may help, or muddy things up.

Marc,
Excellent and as usual you have provided the definitive answer. It has also confirmed my ‘theory’ in post 13 above!

Love the info re the beret and the backing!

Jon, your picture is also very interesting as it shows that the WRAC continued to wear the affiliation badge on the left breast above the pocket. Only sorry we can't see which one she is wearing.

Did they wear the affiliation badge throughout their existence or was it discontinued at some point?

Yes, as appropriate to the unit to which WRAC personnel were attached, a collar badge (sometimes a cap badge) was worn on the left breast of the No 2 Dress Jacket (which had no pocket) up until 1992 when the WRAC was fully integrated into other Regiments and Corps. Officers did not wear such a badge. Personnel in WRAC units (i.e. not attached) did not wear an additional badge.
I served 31 years in the Intelligence Corps and there were WRAC personnel in many units. In the late 1980s the Director Intelligence Corps conducted a study titled “The wider employment of Women in the Army”. Not surprisingly the Intelligence Corps was then selected to carry out initial trials where men and women did their basic and trade training together. This was followed up with full integration in the very early 1990s.

I posted a "thanks" for that info along with a query re. a green "beret" I showed photos of - it's disappeared, don't know where I sent that, I'll try again.

Could this caubeen like item be a 1950 pattern WRAC beret? It lacks the black ribbon headband mentioned in the attachment.
I've never worked out what it is, WRAC, WVS, a nursing service headgear or something else?

I would say that this is one of the 1950 type berets not the "Caubeen" type. In all the pictures I have seen it is worn squashed down and slightly pulled back. Maybe the leather was never applied as most of the pictures do not show one. Let me know when you want to let it go.

Made in four sections if the band is included, the sides of the beret are shaped to be higher at the front than the back and the seam of the circular flat top is set back
1 1/2" towards the central disc of the top from what would be the edge if the beret is laid flat.

It does indeed have a black ribbon covered headband, albeit the ribbon is on the inside, not the outside of the headband.

I wasn't planning on moving it on (I've had it about 35 years) but interest noted and recorded, should the beret evade the oft threatened front lawn conflagration.

What strange piece of specialised headgear for WRACs be this helmet?
My recollection of my battalion's little old Polish "Charlie The Barber" is that although it was very much needed you were afforded no protection against his fierce 'air raids.

Possibly the Intergalactic Travellers prototype helmet, designed by Herr Drier.

Tim, Some great info there about wearing the affiliated badges. Many thnaks for sharing. Also, very interesting about your being involved with mixed training.

May not be relative here, but brings to mind a series I watched two seasons of on Amazon titled "Our Girl" about a girl joining the current army and serving in the middle east. I thoroughly loved them and wish there are two more seasons i'll have to try to catch.

Group photo of trainees at the WRAC Depot, Guildford 1953. Shows the different ways the early pattern ‘big’ beret was worn!
