9th Battalion Highland Light Infantry

P4270480.jpg P4270481.jpg thoughts on this one please. I notice the bottom of the badge has been removed, i believe this is to make it easier to wear on certain head dress. i hope this is a good sign. I also like the lugs, the right hand lug has been repaired. What made me put it on the forum is the poor reverse. Thanks in advance Chris |

Thanks Alan.
On first glance i didn't hold out much hope, then i remembered another member saying that the bottom of these type of badges were sometimes removed. Then on second and closer look at the lugs i thought it might be ok. Chris |

I have an identical undamaged one. There is also a short palm frond version with the LacessEt spelling.

I find it exceedingly hard to believe that the removal of the bottom was done on purpose, much less worn that way. The end of the viewers left star projection is also broken off.
I think this badge has had an unfortunate life. CB PS, and one lug has been repaired.

Hi CB
Phil2m has a picture of one in his album. And I read recently ( but annoyingly can’t remember where ) that when this badge was worn on a certain type of head dress the bottom of the badge was slightly too big, so bottom of badge was removed. Pretty sure I read it on here. If it had not been for that article I would have dismissed this badge. Chris |

Well, hopefully someone can dig up that info for us. I can't imagine what type of head dress would necessitate this however. Even the standard khaki service dress cap, which they should normally never have worn.
I placed a 9 HLI badge to the front of one my SD caps and the bottom point does extend slightly, but is easily placed behind the chinstrap. CB

I have sent a msg to Phil, as he has one of these in his album maybe he could help.
Or if I had half a brain I could remember where I saw a mention of this. Hopefully someone else will have seen same. Bit strange. Chris |

9th HLI
It may have been my post in the classifieds for the The Royal Highlanders of Canada,13th BTN, 1st Canadian Division that you saw the badge with the bottom point cut off.
I have been told that this was done to wear the badge lower down on the glengarry, other badge alterations I have found was the folding back of the scrolls on North Staffordshire cap badges with less metal to polish. Rob |

Hi rob.
Yep that was it. So was it possible that this is what happened to my badge. Only problem is I have only seen one other badge like mine. And although my badge also has the bottom neatly removed,as opposed to snapping off, I can’t imagine the RSM being happy with that, it would not be so bad if I had seen a lot more like this. Hopefully other members may have heard of this being done. Thanks rob. Regards Chris |

Chris, having collected badges for many years I have not encountered much of this type of vandalism, when I got my first badge that had been "doctored" like you I was very unsure as to what had happened.
It was only after joining this forum that I found out this was the reason they were cut down. As to what the RSM had to say, well, we will probably never know unless it's down in somebody's memoirs. My 9th Btn HLI was one of the first badges in my collection and I still have it. Rob |

Rob.
The forum is a god send when you come across unusual things. Ref this particular badge, that it was adjusted so as to stop bottom of star rubbing on leather hand band, then to my mind it makes it more interesting. I would like to have a version that has not been cut down, but for now am very happy with it. I am still at the stage of collecting, that when I come across a badge I don’t have I always cross check it with examples on here, and if still not sure will post a pic for other members to confirm if good or bad.
