Default Mounting / Display of Economy (Plastic) Badges

Hi all,

I'm looking for suggestions on how to mount / display WW2 Economy Plastic badges. I really don't want to try and open out the lugs on the back for fear of breaking, but if I don't then its makes for a difficult and "lumpy" display.

ideally I'd like them on card.

Thanks in advance!

Cut slots in the backs of the card to take the brass tabs and then slip a piece of card between the tabs and the backing card to keep the badge in place.
I think klr has suggestions about mounting and storing plastic economies eg materials to avoid,, maintaining an air flow around them rather than putting them in sealed containers or frames.

This sort of thing, one I've just cobbled up to illustrate.
If the tabs are projecting out from the card I slot them through thicker layers of card.

Hi Leigh,

Many thanks for the reply, and also for the pictures. It's certainly a good place to start, I'll have a practice or two before I commit to a full card of badges.

Atb,

David

This thread mentions the "instability" of the plastic badges, eg post no. 9 from John Mulcahy -
"the badges are made of cellulose acetate which can degrade badly and according to the Getty museum is shown to be among the four plastics that deteriorate most rapidly in museum collections. That and I suppose the dislike of them have added to the apparent scarcity of some.

"the storage advice is to keep in well ventilated conditions to prevent the build up of acidic gasses that drive the auto-catalytic degradation . The environment should be stable, cool, and dry (avoid high relative humidities) . Significant fluctuations of temperature and relative humidity should be avoided."

That's great idea! I am planning to start putting together my displays over the Christmas and I was wondering how to attach badges with the blades.

Now, any ideas how to attach embroidered badges that don't have any system on the back and post to be sew on uniforms? I don't want to use sticky tape, etc for them.

A Riker display case may be an option?

Best regards,
