Worcester's officer FS cap badge or sweetheart?
This is the Worcesters badge I recently aquired. I tried including a OSD badge for scale comparison; the badge in question being just a little smaller than that of the OSD.
Note the small loop at the top point of the star on the reverse; the purpose of which I cannot guess. No markings appear. I believe the badge is for the FS cap, but not quite sure of this. CB |

It's a sweetheart ,the safty chain and pin are missing which would be attatched to the small loop at the top of the badge.

I would say that this is a OSD which has been made into a sweetheart? The bronze finish having been removed, possibly then gilt, brooch fittings and chain loop fasteners replacing the blades with cold enamel applied to the garter strap? Andy |

Hello again CB,
I would have to agree with Andy and Andy, I'd like to know where the person responsible for changing it, acquired the blue from ?? oh, if you ever get fed up with it, I know someone who would give it a good home ??? Dave. |

Can you post a picture with a side by side view for a better size comparison cb.

Thanks all,
The badge was not an OSD converted, but purpose made to begin with. It is quite heavy, thus the silver content must be fairly high and it does have real enamel. It is slightly convex with the scroll curving back. CB |

CB,
could only comment on what was seen in your photo, if you had mentioned that it was silver in the first place then that would have closed the OSD door.. There did not look to be that much difference in size of the two badges you posted! I agree that it looks very much like a sweetheart or possibly old comrades use/wear, the top loop whould have been fitted with a chain and saftey pin for added security! Similar adaptations are often found on WW1 SWBs (wound badges).. Best regards Andy |

Hi CB,
I'm not too sure it's a FS cap badge though, according to Roger Bennett's book, Badges of the Worcestershire Regiment, the only enamel on Officers' cap badges was behind the lion......if I've read it correctly, of course ! Dave. Last edited by davec2; 26-05-10 at 08:24 PM. |

Hi cb, i sent the pictures you posted to a friend of mine who collects sweethearts and has a huge collection this is his reply.
Hi Andy, This is a sweetheart brooch. I don't think this is a converted cap badge, the detail is very sharp and I've never seen one that has been enamelled after the slider / lugs were removed. Also as you correctly noticed it has a loop or bale for a safety chain or for attaching to a necklace, typical of a jewellers work. The conversions were a poor imitation for those soldiers that couldn't afford to buy a real sweetheart brooch. John. I hope this was of some help to you . Andy. |

Thanks much all! A sweatheart it is then. Although I dont normally collect these, it is cracker of a badge and actually nicer than the pics portray it.
I think it is a keeper for awhile. CB |
