The white metal crossed flags were introduced in 1934 for visual signallers of Light Horse regiments and Scottish infantry battalions of the Australian Army.

Oxidised copper crossed flags were worn in the Australian Army between 1914-19, 1922-30, and 1939 onwards.

The brass, white metal, and oxidised crossed flags with 5-pointed star were worn in the Australian Army from 1934 by signallers of all Arms, other than Australian Corps of Signals, who had qualified as wireless operators.
