British Colonial Malay
Hello,
Could the collectors of British Colonial Badges please let me know what year this Malay title was worn. And any idea what the writing on the title means? I would be very grateful for any help provided. Many thanks, Invest

I had mine identified (by a chap in Malaysia) a few years back, and was told it read "Royal Malay Regiment".

This is the same text as the badge shown in post #1 above.
To come to my conclusion above I first "typed" the characters. Then I fed the words into Google Translate, which came up with "Malay Soldier". The word at the right (the first word) reads 'skr. When we fill in the short vowels that are not written in Arabic, we get what is most often rendered as askar (both short "a" like in "father", but even shorter) which means "soldier". The second (left) word trans-scription is mlajv, which Googfle transalte translated as given above. The word "regiment" is not there. nor the word "royal".

Its "Askar Melayu" , short for The Malay Regiment. It is safe to assume the shoulder title is in use, in and before 1958.
The Malay Regiment received its "Royal" prefix on April 9,1958 and is officially known as Royal Malay Regiment since. |
